Home Design Round Up Spring, 2019 High Point Market

FIVE FAVORITE DESIGN TRENDS
Spotted at
Spring 2019 High Point Market
Visiting High Point Market in North Carolina is like taking a crash course in home design. It's a whirlwind few days of design deluge, yet it's a perfect place to come away with a vault of sources as well as a clear vision of what's top of mind in style, price point and trends.  I arrived home with visions of (not sugarplums) but chairs, rugs and chandeliers dancing in my head. As one of the ten hand-picked #DesignbloggersTour attendees sponsored by Esteem Media, we walked, talked and listened to titans of industry for two days.  I will be sharing more here in the coming days and weeks- certainly a chair and lighting round up, but today we dish on our favorite emerging trends. Check out our trends & design board for more sources...
1. blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor
we especially noted that rattan, wicker and natural materials for furniture have grown even more popular since last year.  Whole furniture vignettes seem to meld from the indoor of the home to outdoor spaces.  With new technology, new-age materials make it possible for indoor-looking wares to live outside helping to create a new design aesthetic- these blurred lines between outdoor and indoor is fantastic to see.  The look, the materials are more natural in feel, with lots of color and texture. Although some of the mentioned below are not actually outdoor products they lead with this sentiment.  I love how these brands put it all together creating a new normal- a modern vision of both outdoor and indoor living together.
Although not an outdoor collection, Selamat's new Morris & Co. collection is worth noting for leading this aesthetic-- they took the historic William Morris wallpaper and designs and created wonders with them making them fresh and modern.  The Morris designs are also incorporated into the furniture and with their usual charm, Selamat mixes it together with their rattan and other natural materials to create lighting, furniture and accessories.
Howard Elliott's Durango mirror
Howard Elliott's collection of mirrors, art and accessories is awe-inspiring.  I am a huge fan of their modern take on Chinoiserie pottery, cache pots and oversized vases and urns.  They have several convex mirrors that are wonderful takes on the old world version.  Look for more in our mirror round-up next week, but until then, this particular one caught our attention as it works well with this nature-inspired indoor/outdoor look.  The pieces of washed-looking wood hold a nice painted finish then layered to create this oversized mirror which is detailed yet simple at the same time, and stunning!
The All Seasons collection by Lloyd Flanders is slightly smaller in scale than their other collections, and we love this Settee Swing!
The owners of Lloyd Flanders introduced us to their company which has a long history (since 1906) of creating beautiful bespoke woven furniture- 100 percent all-season outdoor  with a full loom product and a newer woven vinyl product all offered in a variety of colors and textures.  Made in the U.S. in their Menominee, Michigan factory, they have 22 collections, and 500 fabrics to choose from.  I'd say they are one-stop shopping for outdoor furniture.  Check out their Style Your Summer program too, @lloyd_flanders
MadeGoods has grown from their first days at High Point.  Their new location in a historic former bank gives them ample space to spread their creative wings and show they are one of the most fascinating brands around.  Their eclectic style of working with unusual, exotic materials then serving it up with reasonable prices, gives designers signature pieces.  With a tricked-out bank vault, a restaurant, and three glorious floors of product mingled with wallpaper and other artisan's brands, this showroom is a must visit and shopping spot when at Market. Their outdoor collection has a wide array of beautiful products.

2. Shagreen furniture & accessories- shagreen is shark skin (loved for a natural rough, granulated surface of pointed scales) then applied on furniture and accessories.  It has a lovely hand, and feels like a beautiful water repellent leather with the bubbled texture.  I enjoy it dyed in unusual colors like blue green and lavender.  It's quite sophisticated, and wears well over time because of the natural water-repellent nature.  The real shagreen is quite costly, so it is most often offered in faux shagreen designs.  The faux versions can give a room the sophisticated look but in a more affordable manner, and we are always happy to see faux animal skins!

Thom Filicia for Vanguard,
loving the feel and quality of his faux shagreen
Look at this gorgeous channeling on these chairs by Sara Richardson Designs for Palliser Furniture.  She created rooms and rooms of beautifully colored, coastal and mountain vignettes with varying color combinations but all very fresh and vibrant.

3. Upholstery Gone Wild {in a good way}- upholstery has had an upgrade and many of the upholstery pieces at Market were showing cut outs, curve backs, channeling, wall beds, and unusual detailing and shapes.  Much of the shapes showed an "old hollywood" aesthetic with swooping backs and deep seats with plush upholstery, almost mid-century in feel but a new modern twist. There were lots of round poufs and pillows.  Almost everything I sat in was purely luxurious and comfortable to lounge on and it feels like high-style living is getting more comfortable.
Upholstered headboards that extend to the entire wall was a "thing" this market, and I like this stylish one over at Universal Furniture.

Soraya stool by Hable for Hickory Chair
Hable for Hickory Chair shows a long-standing relationship with an emerging brand can grow and morph and truly become a work of art.  I've watched these sisters grow with Hickory Chair mentoring them for many years, and this Market's collection is stunning with bits of mid-century, certainly channeling travel with quirks of new-age designs and unusual shapes {from round and triangular pillows} to unusual shapes, textures and a cool-to-warm color palette mixed with varying wood finishes and designs.

Robin Baron's Luna Open Back Mini Chair from the new collection is re-invented classic design with a twist.  It has Robin's unique style intermingled and it certainly feels like it takes inspiration from fashion.  This chair with two tone upholstery and swooping back and cut out design make it a stand out in our book.
channeling on the back and seat and upholstered in a dreamy pink/blush velvet was the show-stopper on the Electra Sofa by Rawan Isaac in Interhall {where they showcase many new artisan brands} in this small yet packed with great style booth.
Pinnacle's low and swooping chairs with a lean back option give dinner parties a more more relaxed feel.  Guests won't want to get up from this table anytime soon.  follow more of their designs on instagram @pinnacleseatingstudio they make beautiful tufted rugs, motion piece upholstery and great leather upholstery as well.
Beautiful detailing on these dining chairs and surprisingly extremely comfortable as well by Ryan Korban for EJ Victor (instagram  @ejvictorinc)  Did you know Ryan was recognized by @arhdigest as the youngest member of their list of top 100 designers in the U.S.?  He certainly shows his talent with this sophisticated furniture collection!
Upholstered bench Ryan collaborated with Dedar fabric.
For Millennial shoppers there is a plethora of affordable furniture on the market, with less short-cuts on style and comfort too.  The new Novogratz Collection with Dorel living shows their glittery, upholstered Mazzy Sequin chair changing designs as touched.  Follow them on instagram @dhpfurniture for their outdoor collection as well.
4. Performance Textiles Everywhere!  gone are the days of the stiff, unforgiving fabric we chose only because it was able to withstand a beating.  This trend certainly goes hand-in-hand with the indoor/outdoor aesthetic.  While utilizing the latest space-age technology of infusing the fabrication of the textile with the ability to persevere, the new performance fabrics (from velvets to linens) are luxurious and beautiful (yes, I write beautiful) to the hand.  Crypton is leading this in the industry.  It's almost too good to be true, but let me assure you we participated in fun demonstrations of pouring, then washing off wine, coffee, soda and ice cream holding our breath while the team showed us how to easily remove stains instantly on upholstery.  It's like a magician's wand and stains lifted off the fabric in a moment.  This literally changes how we live in our homes. We traveled to several showrooms who donned their furniture with crypton fabrics including Lee Industries, Vanguard, EJ Victor, Universal Furniture & more.
Channeling upholstery with Perennials Social at EJ Victor, upholstered furniture with an emphasis on performance, a new breed to handle the spills and mishaps in life.
Nina Magon's collection with Universal Furniture is moody and modern showing performance velvets, European scale, black, wood and metal combined. It offers 15 pieces and working with Crypton, to showcase a performance textile that has an almost suede-like feel.
5. Color, Color & More Color the jewel tones have their say now but also they're mixed with the moody hues of rust, maroon, darker green, ochre yellow, shades of black giving them versatility.  There's also the blush pink in overdrive, some lighter soft colors mixed with emerald greens and tiffany blue- greens are everywhere in every shade.  Although green is having a big moment, I thought blues were going to be non-existent at Market as they've been in such high demand the last few years, but blue remained in almost every showroom in a big way- all hues!  I saw lots of blues and greens combined.  Overall bold, brazen colors and color combinations (as my post on pink combinations in fashion & home illustrated last week) are showing themselves to be a modern way to utilize color in the home.

It's a whole new world with color on furniture-- color gradient, ombre and color blocking - case in point, EJ Victor's Bethan Gray Nizwa Four-Door Cabinet which goes from a lovely jade to white in Birdseye Maple.
Just love the colorful Foo Dogs (also a design trend I noted) and the fantastic mirrors with fun color combining at Van Collier!
fun fact- did you know Foo Dogs are actually lions?  They hold great spiritual significance and to reap that benefit they need to be showcased in pairs facing a certain way.
We love all the colorful textiles on Mally Skok's new line of furniture with Dowel Furniture.  This one the Aegean Klismos!
