After visiting the Hampton Designer Showhouse I'd like to talk about color in design.  When designing homes in the East End of Long Island, I like to infuse a lot of color.  The homes in the unique area we refer to as "the Hamptons" work well when they reflect the plethora of cobalt blue hydrangeas, the big blue sky, the fields of sunflowers, and the rustling green grass outside every window.  There is a reason why artists from all over the world and over history have found themselves painting and creating in "the Hamptons"-- Jackson Pollock talked repeatedly about the incredible infusion of light here.

To me, the finest decorated homes in the area are ones with color, whether it's pops of color juxtaposed against the natural and moody, or saturated throughout.  I love to work with white, black, wood and play these elements against various colors and texture-- there is something so beautifully beach-like yet sophisticated in swathing wainscoting or ship lap in a home on the ceilings and walls and using that as a backdrop for a mix of color and textures.

I take lots of inspiration all summer long with the many events from antique shows to show houses.  The Hamptons Designer Showhouse brings many different designers from all over the country altogether under one roof.  This often happens in the midst of new construction, so it is amazing to see it come together for opening day. One thing is for certain-- show houses are a labor of love.

This year, I found a few bright spots at the Hampton Designer Showhouse. I'm sharing some sources here, and I noted interesting trends (like ombre and an infusion of wallpaper).  However, the rooms that caught my eye and kept me there were ones richly layered with texture and color.  Many of the designers this year showed what I call high-low design (meaning they combined high-end, luxury items with affordable easy to attain products).  This year there were many pretty and livable spaces, rather than over the top aspirational spaces.  There is value in that, especially for the consumer.

I hope you'll visit the show house this year in Bridgehampton, and it's open until September.

1. Rajni Alex Design for Woodard
Rajni's outdoor oasis plunks you somewhere fun, exotic and indulgent.  She brings the luxury of lighting by Currey and Co., and Zia Priven, carpet by Stark and fabrics by Jim Thompson fabrics together with more budget items in a way that works wonders.  The colors are rich and the design is layered, and you could sit outside here forever!

2. Barclay Butera Interiors for Lexington Home Brands
We have come to think of Barclay as synonymous with blue and white, and his living room fulfilled that expectation.  I love the rug, and the layered blue patterns, fabrics by Kravet, and the overall fresh feeling of this space.

3. Lisa Mende Design for Wesley Hall
has a sophisticated color sense-- Lisa wove together many colors yet she did it subtly, and then tied it altogether with textures--from feather trimmed pillows to a leather, metallic chandelier from Ngala Trading

4. The reading Lounge by Mary T. Miller has a beautifully rich wallpaper, touches of gold and lighting by Currey & Co, and to me, it is one of the most interesting rooms in the house with it's layered, nuanced colorful (yet edited) design.
