“I am inspired by American history; rich in decorative details.” JOHN EHRLICH

THE FEDERALIST opened in the summer of 1995 in Greenwich, Connecticut. Ever since that first day, I have been thrilled to see the delight among those who have discovered THE FEDERALIST. Feeling they have found their way home to a world of fine furniture and decorative accessories, gloriously reproduced for their enjoyment and that of generations to come. Every Federalist craftsman is soulfully dedicated to creating an object that is a testament to the 18th century. They love what they do and have deep pride in their work. Time after time, they tell me they respect that THE FEDERALIST provides an opportunity to showcase their work. In every case, THE FEDERALIST uses only the finest materials. Every board in our furniture is hand selected for uniformity and degree of figure. We are privileged to have access to rare species. Construction and finishing techniques replicate those originally used in the 18th century. Joinery methods include dovetail or mortise and tenon. Pegging is done to add strength to stress points. Hand planning and scraping are used to achieve surfaces usually found on the finest period antiques. Intricate inlay and hand carving are Federalist specialties. Equally important is THE FEDERALIST finish. Our craftsmen use a twenty-two step process, including successive acts of hand sanding and hand rubbing. The result is a finish with depth and distinction that defies all others. The same holds true for painted finishes. Traditional formulas of milk paint are applied and either hand rubbed to allow undercoats to reappear or specially treated to create a crackle finish. Lighting at THE FEDERALIST replicates original designs. We often use period pieces to make molds from which we cast new authentic reproductions. Classic brass, antique brass, bronze, silver plate, nickel, pewter, tole, longterne, weathered copper and verdigris finishes are painstakingly achieved within our collection of chandeliers, lanterns, ceiling mount lights, sconces and post lights for interior or exterior use. The same attention to detail is consistent throughout all categories at THE FEDERALIST. From cast brass hardware to tooled leather to hand blown glass. Our collections include porcelain, earthenware, redware, glass, tea caddies, silver plate, brass, paintings and ship models, among others. THE FEDERALIST exemplifies the highest standard of quality. At the same time, we are committed to bringing each of our client’s true value. I am anxious to share my passion with those who appreciate the fine arts of Federal America.
