It's almost that time of year, and just around the corner are visions of ice cream trucks and sunny beach days. I am reminded of all the pleasures the warm season brings to our lives here in the East End of Long Island. Along with all of this good fun comes an array of fundraisers and ways to give back to our farms, our educational organizations and favorite philanthropic causes, all of which help to sustain the culturally rich area that makes up the Hamptons.
To me, ponies and summer go hand in hand, and one way to support the burgeoning equestrian community here in Long Island is to attend the annual Stony Hill Stables Foundation Benefit Cocktail event. This year marks the third annual event, providing equestrian scholarships to local riders of all levels.
On Saturday, June 21 from 6-8pm there will be lots to celebrate. Located on the bucolic Town Lane property in Amagansett, attendees will enjoy a special Dressage Exhibition with narration, an exciting Pony Drill Team Presentation performed by the impressive young riders of Stony Hill Stables, and a rousing Dressage Pas de Deux finale performed by Grand Prix riders.
The farm has been owned and operated by the Hotchkiss family for more than five decades. Owner Wick Hotchkiss will perform and demonstrate dressage practices during the evening's entertainment. The inspiration for the Stony Hill Stables Foundation came from Wick who is a United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Gold medalist.
Stony Hill Stables is the only stable in Long Island to offer this unique scholarship program. Launched in the summer of 2012, the success of the Stony Hill Stables Foundation is evident by mounting ribbons. Gifted scholarship recipients have already earned ribbons in very prestigious horse shows, including the Sagaponack Horse Show, The Hampton Classic and the famed Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), held annually in Wellington, FL.
The foundation’s goal is to create essential opportunities for children and adults to connect with the community, grow physically and emotionally, while benefiting from a life enhancing experience. Scholarship applications for the 2014 season are currently being accepted. Local residents of Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton and West Hampton are encouraged to apply. Scholarship applications are available at www.stonyhillstables.com
Tickets for the Benefit are $125 for single tickets, $200 for pairs, and can be purchased in advance at www.stonyhillstables.com.
