Shelter Island's Artists Exposed With a Day-Long Visit to Artists In Their Studios, Artsi
Artsi:
a day of discovery on Shelter Island
meeting with artists in their homes and studios
lunch at Sunset Beach
Jack & Jill Shop, Sunset Beach
My friend Rochelle and I meet annually on Shelter Island to catch up, have lunch and spend time together. We first met in Boston many moons ago and worked together at a real estate development firm while she was studying at Boston University. Since then, her travels have taken her to a career in art and philanthropy as a producer in Los Angeles. Both of us hail from eastern Long Island, and the lovely enclave of Shelter Island is a perfect mid-point for us to gather when she visits her family on the North Fork of Long Island. One of the things I love about Rochelle is her ability to sleuth out great art and cultural finds. She is a treasure trove of knowledge about art and history, and since I first met her when she was an avant garde Performance Artist in the 1980s, I have been inspired by her artistic talent. It's always an adventure with Rochelle, and following a delicious sun-swept afternoon at my favorite island spot, Sunset Beach, she suggested we embark upon an in-home art tour she heard about on the island. How serendipitous this should take place the one day we got together on the island because we both have remarked over the years that Shelter Island remains a bit of a mystery to us. It's quiet, remote and secretive with roads that seem to go on forever encased in beautiful landscapes of greenery, rolling hills and glistening ocean. With map in hand, we charted our course meandering throughout the island to visit artists in their homes--to see their studios, their works and talk with them about their craft. The icing on the cake is we explored our mystery island with a mission and purpose.
What is Artsi?
It is a Shelter-Island based community of professional artists
working together on various cultural events and exhibitions who founded Artsi six years ago. The great mystery starts to unfold...This day-long event spread out throughout the island is actually an annual highlight of art in Shelter Island. It has become an informal and personal way for these artists to reach out to the community and share their work. No reservations necessary, no fee charged, one simply stops in for a cup of tea to these artist's home who greeted us with a warm smile and eager to share their stories, Shelter Island style! The only ingredient needed for the day is a sense of adventure. This year, 16 artists participated, all resident members which included talented painters, photographers, print makers, digital artists and sculptors. Although many of the pieces are for sale, these artists almost all work on commission basis as well. We are happy to share with you their works...
Some of these works are on display at the ART GALLERY at The Shelter Island Public Library until April 25. Please check out these artists and their works.
