Last Thursday, I was invited to join guests at Tom Samet and Nathan Wold's luncheon table at the Maidstone Club. The luncheon followed a lecture hosted by the East Hampton Historical Society and led by landscape architect Thomas L. Woltz. The room was filled to the brim with enthusiastic guests all sharing a love for historical preservation. Mr. Woltz presented Dynamic Preservation Through Landscape Design and walked us through his passion and talent for historically-based design while showing us some of his incredibly rich and historically relevant projects. The most profound advice he gave was to remember the land and homes we inhabit often have a hidden or forgotten narrative imbedded in the land, and he suggested we need to listen to that history during our renovations and designing. Chairman of Christie’s Americas, Marc Porter (and sponsor of the event), led a lively Question-and-Answer session following the talk. The entire experience gave me an even deeper appreciation for history and preservation.

The Summer Lecture Luncheon was presented by Wilmington Trust, and made possible in part by the generous support of Christie’s, ELLE Décor, and Oscar de la Renta. Proceeds from the program will benefit the Historical Society’s partnerships with local schools as well as the preservation of its world-class artifact collection.
