The Beauty of Blue & White in the Home for Summer 2021

Leave it to designer extraordinaire Mark Sykes to make Blue & White feel at once classic and modern as he does here in this Alabama home featured in Veranda magazine.  The upstairs landing shows blue and white in fabric by Duralee; wallcoverings by Soane; and a gorgeous rug by Merida.

Color Story:

Five Ways To Bring a Little Blue & White

To Your Home Summer 2021

wielding my camera in Edgartown

What could me more fresh than the colors of blue and white together- when I picture these hues I immediately think of a Maine cottage by a lake, or blue hydrangea covered streets in Edgartown on the island of Martha's Vineyard- the sky and sea together sparkling blue with lots of white thrown in for freshness. Blue & White in the home just feels perfect, especially this summer when we need now more than ever to feel invigorated in our homes. We are throwing the windows and doors open to let the fresh air in, and hopefully inviting guests over for the first time in a long time to "break bread" around our kitchen tables. Hope you're planning to fire up the grill, because this promises to be the most social summer yet. There are some relatively easy ways to bring this these colors home- a can of fresh paint, some new textiles and wallpaper, and a touch of blue and white accessories- let summer begin!

unexpected fresh Blue & White interior design I found over on

Jewel Marlowe's Instagram. This room has just enough of the two colors to make it feel subtle and sophisticated.  Love the art!

FIVE WAYS TO BRING BLUE & WHITE

TO YOUR HOME...

1. Add Blue and White Fabric and wallpaper to your home with pillows, upholstery and drapery.  Check out the Color Story over at our root cellar designs' textile studio this summer.  Our news Keys To Life blue and white wallpaper looks smashing alongside these wicker chairs and wooden table.

2. Paint Your Front Blue to bring in positive, healing, uplifting energy. We love this color, Jamestown Blue by Benjamin Moore and it's a nice medium, almost-French Blue color and perfect for a front or interior door. Design created by Christopher Maya and featured in House Beautiful magazine.

3. Because of many sandy visits to the beach, we don't always add rug runners to staircases.  Sometimes it's fun and easy to paint the stairs a deep, marine blue, or a light French blue and against the white, it shines. Our favorite paint to use is Fine Paints of Europe in their HIGH GLOSS FINISH, and the paint is worth the splurge.  They even has a Paint Your Door Instructions on their website if you paint a front door as well. photo via greigedesign.blogspot.com

4. Hang Blue & White vintage plates on your kitchen wall.  Antique plates can be costly but mis-matched vintage ones are easy to find at local flea markets or over at etsy.  Check out the informative story at Veranda magazine about the history of Blue & White ceramics. I have been collecting blue and white for years and mismatching plate collections I hang on my kitchen wall - this one I found over at etsy as design inspiration. I love Transferware, Blue Willow, Spode and others-

5. Paint one accent wall (with otherwise white trim and moldings) rich, Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball.  One painted wall surrounded by lots of white (cabinets and trim) is a dramatic statement, and brings a point of focus, some depth and sets a moody yet uplifting tone.
