Memorial Day Dreams with an Aperol Spritz Recipe To Boot

Waxing philosophical about Memorial Day in East Hampton
and an easy Aperol Spritz Recipe Share...
This holiday brings back happy memories for all our family.  It's the promise of summer and reminder that we will soon embark upon a whole season of eating all the delicious food like fresh tomatoes and corn, and the smell of the back yard grill infused with the chlorine from the pool, sometimes the waft of fresh cut grass and the early morning birds singing.  The sandy beaches and sun swept dunes with early mornings we walking the puppy along the edge of the ocean while the gulls swoop.  Memorial Day is a solemn holiday about loss and wars and war heroes that we Americans have turned into the most promising of days.  We have a tendancy to do that, don't we?

To me, the more old fashion the better, and places like East Hampton have long been around to bring these special moments to life.  As long as I can remember, folks would say that the shore line is now ruined with tourists and now influencers who flock out here for the newest restaurant and trending shops. But, the Hamptons represents all the old fashioned parts of summer that remind me of my childhood in Long Island.  I like to hold onto those special pieces of summer, and yes, it's gotten built up and it's long been oh, so Bougie and popular but if you look long and hard those lazy, Hamptons moments still exist.  The farm stands (not the trendy ones) are still offering their bunches of wildflowers with a rusty box to leave money, the fishermen are still up early for a morning catch and any given sunrise you'll see the boaters meandering through the cut leaving East Hampton marina.  So, you see, it's all perspective.  We see what we want to see in our lives, and yes, there is now designer shops lining the streets of East Hampton- the same shops that many moons ago were homes to local merchants.  There has been some loss of authenticity but the beauty and preservation and the simplicity still exists.  One thing that remains a constant is that life never stays the same, it's always changing.

My daughter is getting married next Fall in Tuscany, so we have incorporated a few Italian traditions into our summer living in East Hampton. My favorite activity in is to invite a few guests over for Apertivo (the Italian tradition before dinner of putting out a little tray of snacks and sipping on cocktails). We do this under the shade of our pergola and it's an easy and informal way to entertain.  My husband's favorite cocktail is the iconic Aperol Spritz. We have adopted this tradition into our lives and encourage you to do the same.  Ciao!  Happy Memorial Day weekend!

    Happy Nesting
