A Modernist Dream Home With A Soul On Georgica Pond
Tucked on a discreet side street, this home has sweeping views (set on 2.2 acres) of the unique, marshy Georgica Pond. Although it's a newer home built in 2017, I can see why it was chosen for the beautiful historic property it inhabits. The fantastical architecture, a Bates-Masi design, channels both the potato barns of the past and modern glass homes built in the 1960-80s, yet with high cathedral center and sharply angeled roof points it captivates in a truly unique and majestic way. At first glance it appears to be a gleaming white (I thought stone) home bathed by the sun but when walking up close we realize it's not white but a sun-bleached natural wood. We immediately see how this home feels at home with the landscape, and with multiple oversized windows that allow verigated light to stream in from every setting to allow guests to revel in the the marsh and wonder of Georgia Pond. The 6,600 squre foot home celebrates the land and nature, and the interior design's emphasis is squarely placed on the views from every vantage point. Unique features are cedar screens throughout, oversized cedar shingles (which gives it an even more modern appeal) and how the home centers around a courtyard that feels reminiscent of a Japanese Garden with maple trees and stone. We came away quite smitten, and check out our Video Tour.
Lily Pond Lane is one of those streets you see in old movies with overgrown ancient trees bent over the road. As you meander through the country road you take in bits of sweeping ocean views one one side and serene pond views on the other. The road winds up at the local Georgica Beach and next door is the infamous home, Grey Gardens. You catch glimpses of mansions behind the hedges, and one can only image the interiors of these grand homes. It's one of my favorite streets in all of the East End. We were thrilled to view this family home set way back from the road to capture the ocean views (we took a golf cart ride to the house). The house is perched on one of the highest part of the dunes and sits on almost 6 acres of coveted land. It is a majestic traditional shingle-style home. The home was bought and built upon by a business tycoon couple a generation ago, and today acts as a comfortable family compound and yes, it has the views and drama you'd imagine. The color palette feels sand-washed in muted neutrals to keep in line with the soaring light coming off the ocean. There is unique museum-worthy art throughout the home to boot. From every window in the house are views of the crashing ocean and the beach below. Check out our video recap.
