This year, I had the pleasure to chat with Suzanne Wesley of HALFACRE Antiques & Interiors which is located on my favorite island, Martha’s Vineyard. I met Suzanne last July when I popped into her booth and came across a gorgeous French fience plate collection in her well-styled space. Take a look at what she had to say about this year’s show and her love for the East End of Long Island…
I love the eastern end of Long Island, which is similar to her growing up on Cape Cod in summers. The beaches, the salt air, the small fishing shacks and the open spaces, and the feelings of early surfing lore from the 1950’s and 60’s. Sand and salt, cold water and dune grasses are what I love – as a lifeguard and swim instructor this part of the country is what I call home.
What do you like most about the East Hampton Show?
Last year was my first time showing at the East Hampton Antiques & Design Show and I was thrilled to participate. It was lovely to be included with so many other talented dealers, and this show is beautifully run in a gorgeous setting. The items shown are such a wide range – Americana, Mid-Century Modern, European and Asian pieces – art, textiles, furniture, garden and lighting – all wonderfully displayed by dealers representing many years of knowledge and expertise. Some of the attendees of this show are representative of some of the most recognized names in the design world, along with my favorite customer of last season’s show being a very young man who purchased an abalone shell for the start of his shell collection. All the diffcult and often dirty work behind the curtains of this business burgeons into an exceptionally beautiful event, with lovely friends and returning customers, and I am so grateful to be a part of the wonder of it all.
What special items are you bringing this year?
I’ll be bringing an assortment of art, rugs, furniture and accessories; including a beautifully framed set of sea-life from Histoire Naturelle, some small hand-colored framed engravings from the 18th and 19th century, a French wine tasting table with an iron base from a former wine collector’s cellar in Connecticut and a stunning Swedish sawbuck table with original paint. I have a special painting by R. Carpentier of an East Hampton landscape, and a beautiful 1940’s stick wicker set of sofa and chairs – always a mix!
