Under The Pergola Summer 2018: 5 Favorite Garden Shops in the Hamptons

UNDER THE PERGOLA Column:
Our Five Favorite
Garden and Landscaping Shops
in
The Hamptons!
our hydrangeas were full bloom
at our home in Springs!
Gardening and landscaping is a passionate pursuit in the East End of Long Island.  Every where you turn it seems there is lush greenery, beautiful hedgerow and rows of overflowing colorful hydrangeas.  All this beauty does not come easily folks.  Behind the scenes there are talented "green thumbs" making all this botany and green bounty possible and seem effortless.

The garden shops of the Hamptons are like a visit to your favorite botanical museum with every species under the sun available, for a price. Truth be told there are not many bargains to be had in these parts.  Since we built our home over twenty years ago here in East Hampton, we have sampled the goods from many of these fine establishments.  Sadly, some of our favorite garden shops have come and gone, but here are our top five favorites, the ones we frequent repeatedly, and are in a close proximity to our home--from Amagansett to Bridgehampton.
Buckley Farm & Flower Shop
on Montauk Highway in Wainscott
has a large offering and the owners are very welcoming to boot! This summer, we picked up herbs and cobalt blue Nikko hydrangeas from them.
is delightful and chock-filled with indoor and outdoor treats for the home.  The plantings are extravagant and are styled looking straight from a gardening magazine thanks to the interior designers who own the place.

in Bridgehampton is the closest thing to an agricultural, rural garden shop selling a plethora of outdoor/farm necessities from chicken feed to fencing and shubs and plants, and although not bargains, we have picked up our Christmas trees here for a reasonable price.
on Snake Hollow Road in Bridgehampton
offers an oasis of lush plantings and all the paraphernalia one could ask for to create a gorgeous garden.  Housed in a 19th century barn, the garden shop sells a mixture of antiques and objects. The staff is the friendliest bunch in the Hamptons!
set on the edge town, they have the prettiest, freshest flowers and potted orchids in the the area, hands down.  I often stop in here to pick up hostess gifts, and and I always buy my Thanksgiving centerpiece here.  Back in the days when I designed my tables under the Grand Prix tent at the Hampton Classic, they whipped up gorgeous arrangements for me. my story about them in Dan's Papers magazine.
