CHANNELING PEGGY GUGGENHEIM AS I ANTICIPATE BRAFA ART SHOW IN BRUSSELS

video about BRAFA
Today, I'm inspired by Peggy Guggenheim- the style icon and art philanthropist who dedicated most of her life to supporting the arts.  She has been credited for helping to illuminate the careers of painters such as Jackson Pollock, William Congdon, Wolfgang Paalen, and Max Ernst.  Peggy made a bold move in the 1940's, when she relocated from New York City to Venice and purchased the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal, making it her permanent home for the rest of her life. She curated an exquisite art collection, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and today the museum in Venice is considered one of the most important museums in Italy showing both European and American art from the early 20th century and celebrating Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism.
My travels in 2015 with Blogtour to
The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice
These "bat wing" or "butterfly" sunglasses became Peggy's signature look when her friend American artist Edward Melcarth created these now iconic glasses.  The design showcases her love for abstract art, certainly the main passion in her life.
"From her penchant for abundant jewelry, to her proclivity for cellophane-wrapped Schiaparelli, nearly 40 years since her death, Guggenheim’s impact is yet to wane."

So, I'll be thinking of Peggy as I travel throughout this expansive art show in Brussels.  Take a look at a sampling of four pieces that will be on display at BRAFA  this week, just a few I plan to see in person...

WHAT IS BRAFA?
BRAFA was created in 1956, and today it is one of the oldest and most prestigious art fairs in the world showcasing European art and antiques with classicism, modern & contemporary art and design highlighths. They have jewelry and decorative arts as well.  BRAFA brings together 65,000 collections and art lovers from around the world. This year, Brit's Gilbert & George are the guests of honor for the show.  I promise to report back on all of it.
What else will be on my radar at BRAFA?
I'd love to attend the daily Art Tour at 3 pm, then the Peggy Guggenheim Lecture on Thursday 1/31 at 4 pm with author Amélie d’Arschot.  Please check out the full schedule of talks and events here
