PART 3-The East Hampton Historical House & Garden Tour, A Lovely Visit To The Little Grey Gardens
You Have Heard The Story of
East Hampton's Grey Gardens,
But
Did You Know There Was
A Carriage House Next Door
Called Little Grey Gardens?
We finish our five-house and garden tour with the East Hampton Historic House and Garden Tour this season at the Little Grey Gardens. It is a spectacular piece of property and carriage house on one of the prettiest streets in all of East Hampton right next to Georgica Beach. Last year, we toured Grey Gardens, the infamous home originally owned and lived in by the Beale family (Jackie O's cousins) in East Hampton. Read My Grey Gardens Story Here and my Grey Gardens Tik Tok here.
The house became iconic when the documentary about the mother/daughter Beale duo fell upon hard times after Big Edie Beale's divorce. The once jet-set family lived in squalor in this gorgeous home. The duo's emotional and financial downward spiral included them becoming hoarders (the house was even condemned by the village of East Hampton with them living amongst raccoons and digressed with them eating out of cat food cans). The story is tragic and touching and hard to describe why it's become so popular after the initial documentary but here have been lots of story tellers spinning their tales- from a Broadway Show to books and movies with this historic home at the center.
The original Grey Gardens (next door) was recently purchased by fashion designer Liz Lange and has had a big renovation. However, this smaller, charming carriage house built by the same architect (Joseph Greenleaf Thorpe) was originally owned by the Beale family who sold it off early on during their financial struggles. This home has not been written about as much, but we loved seeing it on the tour because although it's smaller, it's packed with a lot of great style. We love the green painted wooden floors throughout and the blue/green color story which adds a lot of charm to the home especially set against the ocean views.
